Ankle & Calf Pumps: The 'Second Heart' Move

Try it now: two small moves

Rest one hand on a chair back for balance.

  1. Lift your toes, and hold. Keeping your heels down, raise your toes toward you and hold for five slow seconds. Then lower them.
  2. Lift your heels, and hold. Rise gently onto the balls of your feet and hold for five slow seconds. Then lower just as slowly, and feel a light warmth filling your calves.

Alternate between the two, about ten times through. Slow is the whole point here, and five seconds is longer than it sounds.

Seated option: the same two lifts and the same five-second holds on the edge of a chair. The same muscles, a little more gently.

That is the whole move. Little and often is the idea, not a hard workout.

Why the calf is called your "second heart"

Blood has an easy trip on the way down to your feet and a harder trip back up against gravity. This is where your calves earn their nickname. With every contraction, the calf muscles gently squeeze the deep veins in your legs and help push blood back up toward the heart. That is the calf muscle pump, sometimes called the second heart.

Steady, rhythmic movement does something else too. It supports flow out to the farthest, smallest vessels, your microcirculation, which is where oxygen actually reaches your cells. Rhythmic muscle activity nudges the vessel lining to release nitric oxide, the signal that tells a vessel to relax and open. That signalling molecule was important enough to earn the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (Nobel Prize). Research also links regular movement with healthier small-vessel function (Heart and Vessels, 2024).

How often to do it
