You have seen the number a hundred times without ever reading it as a number. It sits on the back of the bottle, in the fine print of a health article, in the offhand advice from someone who means well: 600 IU (international units) of vitamin D a day. It feels settled. Official. The kind of figure you assume a room full of careful people arrived at once and never has to be questioned again.

So here is a genuinely uncomfortable question, and it is not a fringe one. What if that number is partly the result of an arithmetic slip, and two researchers caught it in plain sight? This is a real, published story, and it is more honest, and more useful, than either camp usually tells it.

Where 600 Came From

The number has a clear origin. In 2011, the Institute of Medicine (the body now called the National Academy of Medicine) reviewed the evidence and set the recommended dietary allowance for vitamin D at 600 IU a day for most adults, rising to 800 IU after age 70. It also set a tolerable upper intake level, a ceiling for routine daily use, at 4,000 IU a day for adults. Those figures are the ones government health authorities still publish today (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements; Vitamin D fact sheet).

So 600 IU is not a marketing invention. It is the considered output of a serious panel. Which is exactly what makes the next part land the way it does.

The Math Mistake, in Plain Language

In 2014, two Canadian researchers, Paul Veugelers and John Paul Ekwaru, took the Institute of Medicine's own data and re-ran the statistics. Their analysis reported what they described as a straightforward error in how the numbers had been read (Veugelers and Ekwaru, 2014; PMC).

Here is the heart of it, without the jargon. When you study a supplement, you can measure the average response of a group, and you can wrap a confidence band around that average. That band tells you how sure you are about the group's average. It does not tell you how much an individual person needs to be reliably covered. Those are two different questions, and the claim is that the 600 IU calculation answered the first one while the recommendation is meant to answer the second.

When the pair corrected for that and asked the right question, "how much would it take for 97.5 percent of people to reach the target blood level," the figure they got was not 600. It was roughly 8,895 IU a day.

That is a startling number, and this is the exact moment where honesty matters most, because the researchers themselves flagged the catch. The studies feeding that calculation only tested doses up to about 2,400 IU a day, so 8,895 is a projection far beyond the actual evidence, and they wrote plainly that caution is warranted in interpreting it. A later analysis from a separate group, working through the same problem, landed on a more moderate proposed figure of around 7,000 IU a day from all sources, and argued it still sat inside a safe range (Heaney and colleagues, 2015; PMC).

Read carefully, the critique is narrower and stronger than the headlines make it. It does not prove that you personally need 8,000 IU. It makes a specific, defensible point: the way the floor was calculated appears to have understated how much vitamin D it takes to cover most people, and that deserves to be taken seriously rather than waved away.

The Other Half of the Truth: More Is Not Automatically Better

Here is where a responsible read has to slow down, because it would be easy to sprint from "the floor might be too low" straight to "so I'll take a lot." The evidence does not support that leap.

The largest, cleanest test we have is the VITAL trial, which gave more than 25,000 healthy adults 2,000 IU of vitamin D a day, or a placebo, for about five years. That is more than three times the recommended amount. The result: it did not lower their rate of heart disease or cancer compared with placebo (Manson and colleagues, 2019; PMC).

So both simple stories are wrong. "600 is obviously right and settled" is wrong, because the way it was derived has a credible, published challenge. And "if the floor is too low, pile it on" is also wrong, because when high doses were actually tested for the outcomes people care about, the hoped-for payoff did not appear. The grown-up position is the one in between: your vitamin D status is worth knowing, and it is not something to guess at with ever-larger capsules.
