Swollen Ankles in Hot Weather: What's Normal and What Isn't

It is four in the afternoon in August. Your ring will not come off, there is a sock line pressed into your ankle, and your shoes feel a size too small.
For most people, in most summers, this is an ordinary response to heat. It is also a presentation that can mean something else entirely, and the whole value of an article like this is telling you which is which. So the boundary comes early here, not buried at the bottom.
First: which kind is this?
The ordinary heat kind usually looks like this. It affects both legs roughly equally. It builds through the day and is worst by evening. It goes down overnight and you wake up more or less normal. It shows up in hot weather and not otherwise. It does not hurt.
Talk to your doctor instead if any of this is true. Swelling in one leg only. Swelling that does not settle overnight. Swelling that arrived without heat to explain it. Swelling with breathlessness, especially lying flat or waking you at night. Swelling with chest discomfort. Calf pain, warmth or redness. Swelling that started after a new medication. Swelling in someone with known heart, kidney or liver conditions.
That list is not a formality. In this age group, the same picture can be several different things, including a common side effect of some blood pressure medications, and only someone who can examine you and knows your history can sort it out. This article is educational and does not diagnose.
With that settled, here is what the ordinary kind actually is.
Why heat makes you swell
Two things happen at once on a hot day.

First, your body widens the vessels near your skin to release heat. That is the core mechanism of human temperature control, and skin blood flow can shift dramatically depending on thermal demand (Charkoudian, 2003; Mayo Clinic Proceedings). More blood is sitting in the small vessels close to the surface, and pressure inside those vessels rises.
Second, when pressure inside the smallest vessels goes up, a little more fluid crosses out into the surrounding tissue. That is normal traffic, not a leak. Fluid moves out, and it is supposed to be moved back.
Gravity decides where it collects. Standing or sitting for hours means it settles in your feet, ankles and lower legs. The same day spent lying down would put it somewhere else entirely.
The part most people miss
Fluid does not return uphill on its own. Getting it back depends heavily on your calf muscles.
Every time your calf contracts, it squeezes the deep veins in your leg and pushes blood upward, with one-way valves stopping it falling back. This is why a whole day standing still at a counter can be worse for swelling than a day spent walking. Standing is not the same as moving. Movement is what runs the pump; stillness switches it off.

That is also why "drink more water" is a poor answer here. The problem is not usually fluid volume. It is fluid distribution and the pump that redistributes it.
What actually helps
- Elevate above hip level for ten minutes. Feet on a stool is better than nothing; feet genuinely higher than your hips is what moves the needle.
- Run the calf pump. Twenty calf raises, or point-and-flex your toes twenty times. Every hour when you are sitting a long time.
- Break up long stillness. Long drives, long flights and long shifts standing are the classic triggers. Stand and move once an hour.
- Walk in the cooler windows. Early morning or after sunset. Movement helps; movement in peak heat adds load without much benefit.
- Loosen what is tight. Socks with hard elastic bands work against you at exactly the wrong height.
- Cool down. Anything that lowers the need for heat-shedding also narrows the vessels driving it.
On compression: graduated compression stockings are commonly used, but sizing and pressure matter and they are not right for everyone, especially people with arterial circulation problems. That is a conversation with your doctor or pharmacist, not a guess from a size chart.
On salt: you will read that cutting salt is the answer to swelling. For some people, in some situations, that is true. For others it is the wrong direction entirely, especially after a long stretch of heat and heavy sweating. Because this depends on your kidneys, your blood pressure and your medications, it belongs with your own doctor rather than an article. None of this treats anything. It supports a system that is already doing its job, which is the same lens behind vascular age.
